Medical Emergency
Medical Emergency is the most feared thought envisaged through our phase of life; irrespective of its nature, cause of the emergency, our relation to patients and geographies.
I called on an elite hospital citing the emergency for admission and treatment for the non-covid medical situation for a non-covid (covid negative) patient. Due to my utmost interrogative and aggressive demeanour with the hospital's front desk, I finally got a positive reply to see the Residence Medical Officer (RMO).
I met the RMO with softcopies of the patient's medical reports and requested the RMO if my patient can be admitted. RMO said yes the patient is in admissible medical conditions, however, check with the administration team if there is a bed available in the general ICU or you may have to go for an Isolation ICU.
The administration confirms the availability of beds in ICU and I get the golden question:
Sir, Do you have a Mediclaim?
The golden question is probably the most sought after question, during the pandemic or even otherwise in every medical case; whether it is diagnostic and pre-planned medical surgery or an emergency situation.
Have we come to a stage where the hospitals as “Business Centres” and doctors as “Marketing / Sales Professionals”, don’t seek for the cause of your pain, but your “financial preparedness” or “deep pockets” to get treated? Sorry for not using the word “Cured” or “Healed” as they are the foremost cause of nobility for a medical profession and its oath.
The medical professionals have sadly diluted the dignity and sanctity of their profession, of course, there are honourable exceptions, who have kept the flame burning by observing strict ethical and moral standards of their profession and proved to be a saviour of humanity.
This very incident and the crisis around the hospital sought from me the best answers that a common man will have to address irrespective of being infected by the pandemic or any other medical situation. How can he answer in the most suitable manner the golden question:
